Joann Cummings, 93 of Marietta, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2026 at The Pines in Marietta, OH.
Joann was born on May 2, 1933, in Lower Salem, OH, the daughter of Harold and Ethel Schoeppner. She graduated from Salem-Liberty High School in 1950 and went on to become a homemaker and genealogical author.
Joann had a lifelong passion for family history. She researched extensively and published seven genealogical books documenting her own family and her husband’s lineage. She was active in many organizations dedicated to preserving history. Joann was a longtime member of the Marietta Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as Chapter Treasurer for more than 25 years. She was also a member of the Cameo Society of the Ohio DAR, the Ohio Historical Society, the Washington County Historical Society, and many others. Among her proudest accomplishments was her work with children in the Mary Gardner Owen Society of the Children of the American Revolution. She held several leadership roles at both the local and state levels, and under her guidance the local chapter was recognized as the #1 society in the nation.
Joann was married to Alfred E. Cummings for 70 years. Together they enjoyed traveling and were fortunate to visit all 50 states, as well as take several cruises.
Joann was preceded in death by her husband Al, her parents, and her brother, Charles Schoeppner.
Joann is survived by her five children: Michael Cummings (Debra), Columbus, OH; Barbara Cassidy (Brian), Austin, TX; David Cummings (Trina), Marietta, OH; Paul Cummings (Laurie), Logan, OH; and John Cummings (Alfredo), Austin, TX. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Rosa Cummings, Richmond, VA; Chuck Cassidy (Katelyn), Austin, TX; Margaret Cassidy, Austin, TX; Kristopher Cummings (Morgan), Hilliard, OH; and Caleb Cummings (Emma), Cincinnati, OH; three great-grandchildren: Olivia Cassidy, Austin, TX; Case Cassidy, Austin, TX; and Scott Cummings, Hilliard, OH; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike Street, Marietta, OH. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta OH. Visitation will take place from 12 PM until the time of service on Tuesday at the Funeral Home.
