Raymond A. Schindler, 98, of Oxford, Ohio, and formerly of New Riegel, passed away on Sunday, June 28, in his home at Oxford.
He was born on May 9, 1928 in New Riegel, Ohio to Reginald M. and Ellen E. (Saylor) Schindler. On April 23, 1949, he married Therea M. Metzger.
Survivors include his daughter Linda (Michael) Berger of Harrison, OH; grandchildren Zachary Berger and Lindsey (Jordan) Nuhring; great grandchildren Lyra Ray and Jude Nuhring; and sister-in-law Donna Durbin of Sandusky.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, October 30, 2021, his parents, brother Robert, and sister-in-law Nancy (Smith) Schindler, and 11 Metzger in-laws.
Raymond was born and raised in New Riegel, graduated in 1946 from New Riegel High School. After marrying, Raymond farmed 5 years in Carey, OH, and then "fulfilled his duty" by serving 2 years in the Army, as Company Clerk at Fort Knox, KY. Using the GI Bill, he attended Ohio State University and went straight through getting his Bachelors and Master degree in Community Development. He immediately began working for Ohio State Extension in 1962, retiring in May, 1988. Raymond served 3 different areas during his career: Hillsboro, Fremont and Marietta. During this time Raymond was active with clubs and organizations, especially the Lions Club and Moose Lodge. He played in bands until he retired, playing the clarinet and saxophone. After retiring he and Theresa moved to Harrison where his daughter and grandchildren lived. He volunteered at the grandchildren's elementary school and revitalized their overgrown courtyard with flowers, shrubs, statuary and concrete benches for the students to sit and read. He won 2 beautification awards from the local Garden Club, for the school courtyard and for his own home. In January, 2020, he and Theresa moved to the Knolls of Oxford, Independent Living. Raymond wrote and published 2 books: The History of the Moose Lodge, and Growing Up In New Riegel. Upon his death on June 28, 2026, Raymond was accepted to the Ohio State Body Donation Program for scientific study and research; this completed his bucket list.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, August 1, at All Saints Catholic Community, 39 N. Perry St., New Riegel, OH 44853. Reception immediately following at the American Legion, 20 South St., New Riegel, OH. Friends may visit with the family at 10:30, prior to the Mass.
Memorial contributions can be made to the All Saints Parish, to assist those who cannot afford a burial.
