Martha Louise Huettel, 92, of Naples, Florida, and formerly of Barlow, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026.
She was born on March 31, 1934, in Marietta, Ohio, to Clark and Margaret Samples. Louise graduated from Marietta High School and Marietta College, later dedicating her career to education as a teacher at Warren High School. During college, she was deeply involved with Alpha Xi Delta, later serving as a cherished house mother for several years.
Louise found immense joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved golfing, sewing, and crochet. Known for her sassy personality and wonderful sense of humor, she had a special way of making people feel loved--especially with her Fuzzy Navels on Barlow Fair Parade days.
Louise and her beloved husband, Ed, shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. In 2003, they moved to Naples, Florida, where they enjoyed warm winters, golfing, and attending their grandchildren’s activities. Her family was truly the center of her world.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; and her sons-in-law, Michael Mendel and Gary Bertrand. She is survived by her brothers, Mel (Jan) Samples and John (Nancy) Samples; and her children, Michael (Renae) Huettel, Kathy Mendel, Mark Huettel, and Kary Bertrand. She was the deeply loved “Granny” to her 11 grandchildren: Allison (Pat) Hyland, Nick (Britney) Huettel, Alex (Danielle) Huettel, Mikey Huettel, Cody Mendel, Casey Mendel, Chloe Huettel, Sam Huettel, Kamryn Bertrand, Drew Bertrand, and Evan Bertrand and 9 great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Her spirited personality, generous heart, and fierce loyalty will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was truly one of a kind.
A memorial service for the family was held in Naples, Florida. A graveside service will be scheduled at a later date in Barlow, followed by interment at Barlow Cemetery.
