Robert Allen Smeltzer, 87, of New Matamoras, OH, died at his home on Saturday August 29, 2026. He was born December 18, 1938, in Gallipolis, OH, to the late Melvin O. and Bertina Rutt Smeltzer. Bob retired from Ormet Corp. and was a member of Lawrence Baptist Church. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers and a founding member of Omal Credit Union. He loved helping with the Little League Pony League and Legion Baseball and loved Ohio State. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Virginia Brown Smeltzer whom he married December 12, 1956 in Richmond, IN, daughter Joni Thomas of New Matamoras, son Mark (Simone) Smeltzer of Sherman, TX, grandchildren Gretchen (Ronnie) Earley of New Matamoras and Michael Smeltzer of Huntsville, Texas and Sarah Smeltzer (Brandon) Ferguson of Sherman, Texas, great grandchildren Camron, Keenan, Harper and Bryce and his brothers Jim and Gary Smeltzer. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother William Smeltzer and one sister Joanne Shaw. The family wants to thank Louie and Tina Taylor for being such wonderful neighbors and “Daddy” will see his companion Sam. Funeral services will be held Saturday September 5, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. at Hadley Funeral Home in New Matamoras, with Erin Curtis officiating.
