John Thomas “Tom” Carey passed away with his wife by his side on October 5, 2026, from complications of cancer. Tom was born April 17, 1947, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Anne and John Carey. He grew up in McKeesport, PA, and graduated from McKeesport High School. He was an Eagle Boy Scout, altar boy and loved tennis. He and a friend were the Northern Virginia doubles champions. Tom went to Ohio University on a tennis scholarship and graduated in 1969. He then became a Physical Education Major and taught in Northern Virginia and received his Masters Degree from George Washington in Washington D.C. He eventually went to work at Xerox Corp., M.C.I. Telecommunications, then Bell of PA, after marrying his wife Jan Carey in 1977, they moved to Marietta to buy Central Office Supply, retiring in 1991. Tom is survived by his wife Janice, brother-in-law Bob Samios, brother-in-law Jeff Hill and wife Cathy, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. The family would like to thank Cawley Hospice, Dr. Cawley, Danielle, Sarah, Becka, Holly and Amy. Donations may be made to the Ohio Valley Humane Society or Cawley Hospice.
