Don’t miss the chance to give
We’ve made it through Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Maybe we even managed to get the decorations up and catch a little football. What’s next?
Giving Tuesday. In what’s been billed as a global generosity movement since 2012, today is a chance to take a deep breath and reflect on how we can make a difference for others — then take action.
According to Giving Tuesday Data Commons, an estimated $3.1 billion was donated during last year’s event. Since its establishment 12 years ago, the event has brought in more than $13 billion.
“We are so inspired to see a show of generosity of this magnitude every year. Our goal with GivingTuesday, not just on the day itself but year-round, is to create an ecosystem of giving that helps communities, causes and organizations across the globe,” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s chief executive officer.
It’s a good time of year to do it, as we bask in the glow of holidays that focus on gratitude, family, gift-giving and the celebration of the arrival of one who reminds us to be generous, love and take care of one another.
Don’t know where to begin? Most of your local nonprofits can point you in the right direction — often with entry points on their websites. For example, the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley offers a button where you can “Make your gift online” here: https://www.uwamov.com/. Many other organizations — from small, familiar and local to large and far-reaching — offer similar ways to give.
Be careful, of course. There are always those hoping to prey on people trying to do good. Don’t click on unsolicited links or scan QR codes. Instead, go to the websites of well-known and reputable charities on your own. If you’re still not sure, call the organization for guidance on giving.
Those of us who spent Thanksgiving marveling at the extent to which we have truly been blessed must consider what we can do to help others in our community experience the same. Giving Tuesday gives us an easy way to get started. Don’t miss the chance.
