Washington County 4-H is already a stand-out organization to those of us in the region who know it. But earlier this month, it received recognition at the state level, during the Ohio 4-H Conference.
Jeremy Barth of Fleming received the Ohio 4-H Alumni Award -- he's been a member of three different 4-H clubs, has been a 4-H volunteer for 25 years and is the Washington County club's advisor and chairman of the 4-H Endowment Committee.
Meanwhile, the Washington County Carteens 4-H Club received the Ohio 4-H Innovator Award for its work to reduce the number of fatal car crashes in Washington County. This group of young people has organized a Seat Belt Safety Week for teen drivers at local high schools since 2022. It works with the Marietta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the school resource officer to reinforce the importance of not only wearing seat belts, but driving safely and without distraction.
4-H says its aim is to see "that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us." In schools and businesses across the region there are valuable contributors who learned how to make those improvements to the world around them through 4-H.
These young people, and the adults who work with them, are at work every day in our communities.
