During last week's National Public Works Week observations, Marietta seized the opportunity to recognize some of its public workers for their hard work and dedication. These are the folks who do the kinds of jobs most of us don't think much about -- until something goes wrong or those jobs aren't getting done. They are incredibly important to the everyday function of the city in fields such as streets, bridges, water and sewer systems.
Think for a moment about how much would fall apart (perhaps literally), if these workers weren't so good at what they do.
Because of their commitment, Mayor Josh Schlicher recognized some individuals who were nominated for awards.
Speaking of Public Works Department Facilities Division equipment operator 1 Matt Schaad, Schlicher said "We recognize his outstanding performance and ability to create a positive work environment. You have not only met deadlines but are collaborating with others and demonstrated leadership qualities that inspired others."
The rest of those honored were Jack Brown, laborer 2, Public Works Department Facilities Division; Adam McKenzie, maintenance manager, Water Reclamation Department; Chris Adams, collections foreman, Water Reclamation Department; and Brad Saffell, meter reader, Water Billing Department.
Some of their peers gathered to help celebrate that day, and that is appropriate. Dedicated as these folks are, their work gets done because of teams of people who are also on the job.
We join Schlicher and the rest of Marietta in thanking them -- all of them -- for keeping things running. Goodness knows where we'd be without them.
