Belpre officials and community members are well on their way to revitalizing Civitan Park, after review of a proposed master plan for the project last week. Discussing everything from pickleball courts to an all-abilities playground -- maybe even a restaurant barge -- the ideas were pitched with the help of engineering firm American Structurepoint.
"From athletic fields to walking paths, we've looked at how to elevate what's already working and enhance areas that need more attention," said Mark Underwood, director of landscape architecture at American Structurepoint.
That understanding that there is plenty already working well at the park is vital.
"Our goal is to make Civitan Park a more relevant and accessible space for current and future generations," said Mayor Susan Abdella. "Just to have this plan, to give us a road map, so everyone can be on the same vision, so that no matter who comes next ... all of our groups will now have the same vision, and we can all work together."
That's an important thing to bear in mind. No matter how well planned, this project won't come together overnight. There is enough work to do that finishing it may fall to whoever rises next to lead in Belpre.
That kind of realistic look to the future is necessary in leadership that aims to drive Belpre toward what could be, rather than what has always been.
And a refreshed Civitan Park that holds something for everyone, and is welcoming to everyone could be a very bright part of that future.
With such a clear vision, and sustained community support, there is no doubt those who choose to work together will bring wonderful things to life at the park.
