‘Homelessness is everyone’s problem’

It takes teamwork to tackle some challenges, and those taking part in a new Washington County effort no doubt understand they are stronger together as they work to connect those experiencing homelessness with the resources and county agencies that can provide support for them.

The Washington County Homeless Outreach Team is being facilitated by the Washington County Behavioral Health Board and includes law enforcement, medical providers, social service organizations and behavioral health specialists.

“Our mission is simple but powerful – to improve the well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness by meeting them where they are and connecting them with medical, behavioral, and social services available in Washington County,” said Tim Hahn who is the assistant director of the Washington County Behavioral Health Board and chair of the Homeless Outreach Team.

This will be an active approach, with the team set to provide outreach to homeless encampments and other parts of the county. Community members can reach out to refer individuals about whom they are concerned.

“This effort is about compassion, coordination and action,” said Marietta City Councilwoman Erin O’Neill, organizer of the former Marietta-Washington County Homelessness Task Force. “We want to break down silos and make sure no one falls through the cracks. Homelessness is everyone’s problem, and this team represents our community coming together to address it head on.”

A round of applause for those who did come together to make this team a reality. As we thank you, we look forward to seeing the fruits of your labors.
