Do what you can for your small businesses
Been stuck in the house for a while? Made one last run at the big box store before the snow, ice and frigid temperatures hit and haven’t spent an extra dime since?
One day, we will be through this arctic spell. We’ll need to venture out and do a little shopping. Maybe we’ll just be ready to eat at a restaurant after having gone through everything in the pantry at home.
When that time comes, consider spending your money with a smaller, locally owned establishment. Those who have either been forced to close or have seen VERY little traffic because of this weather may be in desperate need of money to help them pay their bills.
Some small businesses operate on margins that would frighten larger employers. They don’t have much choice. So for them, a day or two without sales or customers could create a challenge. Make it three or four days and the loss of income could be devastating.
Maybe they closed because for them it was the right way to keep their employees and customers safe. Maybe they stayed open knowing foot traffic could slow to a trickle (or maybe disappear altogether), but wanting to be there for their customers JUST in case.
Whatever the situation, it is likely small business owners took a hit from this weather that was more than just snow and ice.
By the way, if you are still stuck, you can probably help some of these places with online orders — even if it may be a little longer before shipments can get to you.
For a lot of us, this stretch of weather has been uncomfortable and inconvenient. For those whose livelihood can feel a little more day-to-day, it may have been much more stressful.
Do what you can for them once you are able.
