Flu season to be taken seriously

It is the season during which many of us simply accept that we will get the common cold or come down with the flu, but failure to do all we can to prevent such viruses can be dangerous. In some cases, it can be deadly.

Last week, Ohio reported its first pediatric flu death of the season — a teenager under 18 in Greene County, according to state health officials. In fact, each year there are between one and seven pediatric flu deaths in the state. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nationwide 6,300 to 52,000 people died from the flu annually between 2010 and 2024.

“This death is tragic and our hearts go out to the family,” said state health department Director Bruce Vanderhoff. “It also reminds us that influenza, though common, is a serious health threat, and we urge parents to protect their kids.”

It is not too late to get vaccinated against the flu. The vaccine is an effective protection against getting seriously ill from the virus. Of course, it is also important to practice good hygiene habits and be smart about distancing (or staying home) if you are ill.

If you have not already done so, ask about getting the flu vaccine — for yourself AND your kids. It’s a simple step.

Do what you can to protect them and other vulnerable people with whom they might come in contact.
