Athens County's Baileys Trail System has been completed, giving hikers, bikers, runners and other adventure-seekers access to an 88-mile system that spans more than 9,000 acres of the Athens unit of the Wayne National Forest.
It is a lesson for others in our region that officials in Athens County believe the trail system will generate approximately $5.3 million in annual economic impact. But it's more than just an economic engine.
While Southeast Ohio is proud of its industrial roots, we know what it has cost us when we look at the scars left on the natural wonders all around us. But the Baileys Trail System was created on former coal mining lands that are now "a premier outdoor recreation destination," according to the Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia.
"What began as a vision for trails has become a catalyst for community investment, tourism, and economic growth throughout Appalachian Ohio," said Jessie Powers, executive director of ORCA. "The Baileys Trail System represents years of collaboration, and today belongs to everyone who helped bring this vision to life - from our partners and funders to volunteers, local communities, and the riders, runners, hikers and families who will enjoy it for generations."
Those are wins on many fronts.
"These improvements will help connect more people to public lands while supporting recreation, tourism, and local communities throughout Southeast Ohio," said Jason Reed, Athens District ranger for the Wayne National Forest.
Well done, to those whose perseverance made it happen. Now let us hope it will inspire more of the same.
