It might not feel like it just yet, but fall is on its way. With the transition to colorful leaves and (for many of us) more comfortable weather comes yet another opportunity for Ohio to shine -- especially for those who didn't quite work the traveling bug out of their system over the summer.
According to TourismOhio, the state offers "gold medal" leaf peeping opportunities, particularly at its 76 FREE state parks and Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
For Mid-Ohio Valley residents, options include Forked Run, Strouds Run, Lake Hope, Hocking Hills, Burr Oak, Jesse Owens, Musingkum River, Wolf Run and Blue Rock, though that's just the start.
“Everyone has their own idea of the perfect fall getaway, and that’s what makes Ohio such a special place to visit,” said State Tourism Director Sarah Wickham. “You can spend the morning chasing fall colors, the afternoon picking apples at a family farm and the evening looking for a little bit of a scare. Whether you’re planning a weekend with friends, a family trip, or just looking for somewhere new to explore, there’s an Ohio adventure waiting for you.”
There are also still plenty of fairs and festivals ahead. And for college football fans, well, we've got a little of that, too. (TourismOhio has even developed an Ohio Sports Road Trip for travelers more interested in pitches and passes than pumpkin patches.)
There are spooky tour options, train trips, good food and drink everywhere … adventuring doesn't have to stop just because the season is changing. That goes for Buckeye State residents as much as out-of-staters. Do just a little exploring and you'll realize how much you've been taking for granted about our state.
“If you want to experience the very best of the fall season, you come to Ohio,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development. “Our changing landscapes, vibrant communities, and one-of-a-kind destinations can help create memories that stay with you long after the leaves have fallen.”
Get out there. Take a drive (or a bike ride … or a hike) to fend off the inevitable cabin fever of winter just a little longer. There is so much, so close, you can have a full mini-vacation here and be back home before bed time. Don't miss out.
