Too many in our region are experiencing needs that go beyond food, clothing, housing, transportation and medicine, as inflation just won't let up. For parents of very young children, there is another necessity many of the rest of us don't consider: diapers.
“I don’t know that folks are aware that diapers are a real need in our community and diaper insecurity is prevalent," said Cammie Loane, registrar and financial clerk of the Marietta/Belpre Health Department, which has organized a Diaper Drive this month.
If you've ever had to keep one (or more) baby or toddler supplied with enough diapers, wipes, creams and powders for them to remain clean and comfortable throughout the day, you know the seemingly never-ending need to run to the store for more. (Especially JUST when you've stocked up with plenty if diapers in the correct size, and discover a few days later they are too tight.)
For families struggling to stretch their budgets to fill all their needs, diapers are another test.
Of special need locally are diapers size 3 and up, and baby wipes, as a previously secured donation included primarily smaller sizes.
But diapers of all sizes and other supplies will be welcomed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the health department at 304 Putnam St., Marietta, through Sept. 30. They then will be supplied to local organizations and families.
“It’s important to help the babies in our community to help keep them clean, and keep them diapered, and we welcome any donations we can get," Loane said.
It's another call for help in a growing chorus, that's true. If you are able, do your best to answer it, anyway.
