Have you ever gone to a major theme park and been given a button to wear that says "First visit!" or some other form of celebration for the occasion? Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose has a similar idea in mind when it comes to those about to cast their first ballots.
The First-Time Voter Initiative will allow newcomers to the polling place the chance to scan a QR code to request a personalized state proclamation "recognizing them for casting their first ballot in an Ohio election, as well as graphics to share on social media. If a first-time voter chooses to cast their ballot by mail or wants to sign up after leaving the polls, they can do so at OhioSOS.gov/FirstTimeVoter," according to LaRose's office.
While the effort focuses on young people who may just be eligible and casting their first ballots for that reason, and recently naturalized citizens participating in their first elections, the idea is to help building lifelong habits for anyone who has not yet fulfilled their responsibility to vote if they are eligible.
"Casting your first ballot is an important milestone," LaRose said. "Whether you're a young Ohioan voting for the first time or a newly naturalized citizen taking part in an election for the first time, this initiative is about recognizing that moment and celebrating your participation in our democracy."
Civic engagement is important. Being part of the decision-making process is important. And constantly looking for new ways to encourage that participation is important.
Well done, to those in LaRose office who have developed the initiatives. Let's hope it encourages lots of new voters to participate in November.
