Resources encourage kids to become better citizens

2 min read

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose seems to have his eye (rightly) on the future with his new initiatives to help educate young people about active citizenship, entrepreneurship, civic engagement and, yes, elections.

Resources include Start Up Squad, which helps students explore entrepreneurship and access educational resources from Junior Achievement; Future Voter ICivics game; Become a Civics Superstar, which includes an online quiz inspired by the official U.S. citizenship test; resources for teachers, including ways to help students become elections workers and voter packets for graduating seniors; Ohio Activity Book for Kids, for younger students looking for a fun way to learn about the state; and other printable education and recognition materials.

“For many kids, the political process may seem mean, confusing, or sometimes downright scary,” LaRose said. “This website will be a great space filled with positive content about getting engaged in their community by participating in democracy and starting a business.”

Today's teachers will tell you, put resources online and make learning fun, and you're already on your way to reaching young people. Given the importance of making sure these students remain engaged and informed critical thinkers who become important parts of our communities, such resources are essential.

"We want young Ohioans to understand that they don't have to wait until adulthood to start thinking about how they can make a difference," LaRose said.

Good. While they're at it, one has to wonder whether LaRose might be able to convince a few adults to take advantage of the resources, too.
