Shop small on this Saturday

Once we’ve had our fill of Thanksgiving dinner, for many families attention turns to Black Friday shopping and the rush to the next big holiday. And sure, there’s a certain adrenaline rush that goes along with grabbing those Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. But while you’re planning your shopping, don’t forget there are small, locally owned businesses throughout our communities hoping you’ll stop by to see the gifts you can’t get by rushing the doors at midnight and snagging five of the same thing everyone else is buying. On Small Business Saturday, you’ve got a ...

Something magical about Thanksgiving

Whether Thanksgiving serves as a day for a family meal, the start of your holiday shopping strategy, the last day before your home is festooned in holiday decorations, or just a day off to watch annual parades and football games, there is something magical about the day. It feels set apart because of its emphasis on celebrating that for which we are thankful, without the pressure of helping Santa do his job for everyone on our personal lists. It may not be gratitude for a “harvest” in the traditional sense, but for many of us it is important to have the opportunity to express ...

Politician map-drawing not the answer

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said on multiple occasions last year that he believed the redrawing of political maps should be taken out of the hands of politicians. He just did not believe Issue 1 on the November ballot was the right answer. Approximately 54% of Buckeye State residents agreed with him, and the measure failed. But 46% of voters supported Issue 1, and no doubt there were plenty on the other side who understood our horribly broken system must be changed, even if Issue 1 was not the way. Now, DeWine says he has a plan to get the job done differently. He told WVXU he’d like ...

Not for the faint-hearted

“Being a United States senator is a big deal,” Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said earlier this month. “It’s a big deal for the state, and we need to get it right.” Given circumstances in Ohio and the U.S. right now, “big deal” might be an understatement as DeWine is tasked with finding a replacement to fill JD Vance’s U.S. Senate seat. Many who seem like easy options to consider are not really candidates. Vivek Ramaswamy has been given other work to do, for the Trump administration. Lt. Gov. Jon Husted and state Attorney General Dave Yost are likely to face each other in ...

Senators should make their decisions

With plenty of buzz surrounding President-elect Donald Trump’s planned nominees for cabinet positions, it is understandable for opinions to form early. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice was right, then, to suggest the candidates named should be given a chance. “He’s got to appoint the team that absolutely that he believes in,” soon-to-be U.S. Sen. Justice said. “We have to absolutely be fair about this, and we’ve got to give them time to get their feet underneath of them to do the job I know they’ll do.” It’s impossible to miss that in the same breath he is asking ...

The difference between consuming news, being influenced

During an age in which a universe of information is at most people’s fingertips, it is no surprise to learn some are changing their approach to how they consume what they consider to be news. In fact, Pew Research Center analysts, with funding from the Knight Foundation, reported earlier this week a study showing approximately 20% of Americans say they regularly get what they consider to be news from digital influencers — most of whom (85%) are found on Elon Musk’s social media platform X. Only a slightly higher number of those who responded said they were Republicans than ...
