Greased pig contest teaches a poor example of cruelty

According to Ohio Revised Code 1717.01: (A) “Animal” includes every living dumb creature; (B) “Cruelty,” “torment,” and “torture” include every act, omission, or neglect by which unnecessary or unjustifiable pain or suffering is caused, permitted, or allowed to continue, when there is a reasonable remedy or relief.

Surely the greased pig contest at our county fair inflicts unnecessary pain or suffering on the pigs and there is an obvious remedy, namely, cancel the contest.

As a lifetime member of the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley charged with inculcation of humane principles and the enforcement of laws for the prevention of cruelty, especially to children and animals, I would advocate following Minnesota’s lead and outlawing greased pig contests in Ohio. They are inhumane to pigs, show lack of respect for animals, and set a poor example for our youth who should be taught to treat all animals, children, and adults in a respectful, humane manner.
