Alice Chapman’s legacy
It was startling to read the news of Alice Chapman’s very recent passing. Mrs. Chapman – or Mrs. C, as she preferred the children to call her – was a significant part of the daily lives of generations of children through the Ely Chapman Foundation. My daughter spend evenings there after school and summers there in day camp for years. I can’t imagine our lives without it.
Mrs. C could come across as stern, but the emotional and intellectual development of children was always her first priority. She wanted every child to be heard and saw them as the individuals they are. I’m thankful for the large role the Ely Chapman Foundation has played in my daughter’s life.
Alice Chapman’s shoes will be hard to fill. No single person could do it, or should. She truly did give her all. I feel confident the community can rally to keep the foundation going strong and evolving through teamwork. There is no better way to honor her legacy.
