All stories are local, former Editor/Publisher Emmett Smelser would remind me often as I wrote articles for The Times.
I spent ages three through six on an army base in Kentucky as my father served a second hitch after the war. We would often spend Saturday mornings on the parade grounds watching and listening to military bands play Sousa music as they marched carrying flags waving in the breeze.
I still get a lump in my throat (and occasional tear) at the sounds of Sousa and the sights of American flags no matter where they are flying. The bigger, higher, the better.
I have a newly acquired friend who lost a best friend in the Miami condo building collapse. Gone. In an instant.
As I awoke Thursday morning pondering the coming weekend, holiday, fireworks and the freedom that all represents I reflected on his words to me Wednesday.
"Be sure to tell your friends and family how much you love them. Often. You never know when it will be the last time."
As we celebrate this holiday of FREEDOM, let us also remember to give thanks and express our love for the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, our friends, families and America.
