A world-class school

The recent gathering of interested citizens to discuss the content and the process for teaching students in the Marietta City School District was an unqualified success. Approximately seventy-five individuals met for over ninety minutes to work through a series of small and large group opportunities and share their hopes and expectations for the young people in the community. One thing was clear… these people care about the education and the future of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Perhaps the most promising “common ground” that was uncovered at the meeting was the idea that school is about more than buildings, although safe and efficient buildings are important; the exploration and discovery of knowledge is really what education is all about. Participants expressed a desire for the same thing: that today’s graduates are ready to meet the challenges of the future whether they choose to “travel the world” or to remain in the Mid-Ohio Valley which itself is home to international companies and innovation.

Although no “decisions” were made, that was not the purpose of the meeting; school officials were able to listen and citizens were able to share ideas and be heard by one another. Marietta City Schools and its students benefit from this kind of open and respectful exchange of ideas. The process that was started is nothing less than a Vision for a World-Class School.
