City funds handicap accessible entrance to Boys & Girls Club gymnasium

The Boys & Girls Club of Washington County extends a heartfelt thank you and recognizes the City of Marietta and Mayor Schlicher for their commitment to the community.

When the Club first made its home on Lancaster street back in 2012, the dream was to have a safe place for youth to go after school. In the back of our minds has always been to build a gymnasium. Nearly 10 years later, we are finally able to fulfill that dream thanks to the people in our community that have believed in us, and supported us along the way. The City of Marietta, and Mayor Schlicher are on that long list of believers.

In order to ensure that our building is a safe space for all youth, it was a top priority to include a handicap accessible entrance. A Community Development Block Grant was applied for to help cover these expenses. The City of Marietta believed that we would qualify for this funding and eased our worries on the completion of the project. Unfortunately, our project did not meet the necessary requirements for the grant. Mayor Schlicher and his administration of kind hearted leaders, and City Council still found a way to keep their commitment to our organization and awarded us with a donation of $15,000 to provide a ramp entrance into the gymnasium. The installation of this ramp will be a crucial element of achieving our mission to serve all youth, especially those who need us most.

We anticipate the gym to be open to serve the Club and Community later this fall. Stay tuned for more information on a grand opening.
