He ain't heavy,
he's my brother!
Lyrics by Bob Russell and Bobby Scott
The road is long with many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where, who knows when
But I'm strong -- strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
So on we go -- his welfare is my concern
No burden is he to bear -- we'll get there
For I know he would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
If I'm laden at all -- I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart isn't filled with the gladness of love for one another
It's a long, long road from which there is no return
While we're on our way to there
Why not share?
And the load -- it doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
Last week, as I was walking towards my backyard, this song filled my thoughts because of what I was witnessing! A few days earlier a storm with high winds hit our small community and I saw firsthand the aftermath of what a storm did to one of our beautiful backyard trees, and what neighbors are so happily willing to do for others.
I heard the truck and trailer coming down the street and out jump three good hearted, spirited souls with rakes and saws in hand and they proceeded to remove the downed tree from our backyard. My husband, Tom, and I were filled with such appreciation and gratitude. I couldn't help but think about what a helpful unselfish act of hard labor and love these three people shared with us. The lyrics to "He ain't heavy he's my brother" kept filling my thankful thoughts as I walked to greet them all.
They wanted nothing in return. They expected nothing but to lend their helping hands. Were they also thinking about the words to that inspiring song? Because I was.
Thank you, the Flaherty brothers Joe and Lance, and Amanda, for your rare generous kind act of giving will never be forgotten! Our tree was lost forever but something better was planted, a lasting memory of that hot summer's evening in July.
