How could it happen here?
Having been raised in this Blessed Country, the United States of America, since the age of 12, it seems surreal to experience such disarray.
In 1987 while we were living in the Netherlands. Borg-Warner, the Company Melvin, my husband was working for, had sent him on an assignment.
We had an opportunity to visit Latvia which was under Soviet Communism, domination. Latvia is the country of my birth. I still had some of my relatives living there.
Our visit showed us up close just what Soviet Communism had done to these peace-loving industrious people and their country.
About half of the population (one million people) of Latvians stayed in Latvia was it by choice or necessity?
For this reason, Soviet Communism subjugated them for 50 years.
We were surprised to observe my brother, as he removes windshield wipers and mirrors from his shabby Muscovite car (about the size of a Mini Couper) and store them in the trunk of the vehicle, while we went into a Newspaper shop to buy a Newspaper.
I did ask him why he stored the windshield wiper and mirrors. He replied. Dear sister, they will be gone by the time we come out of the store.
As I turned on Television at 6:30 a.m., I heard unbelievable. A TV personality was issuing a warning. Gasoline tanks are siphoned. Gas tanks are drilled on newer cars. More bad news. There were stabbing killings in some cities. Is this happening out of desperation, or has the USA totally lost The Moral compass?
I am not saying that while growing up in the USA I had never heard of the crime, however, it was elsewhere and not in my neighborhood. I grew up in Brooklyn, Ohio. A small community about 14 miles southwest of Cleveland, Ohio.
Today my heart breaks for all the Ukrainian refugees. I was also a refugee and spent a number of years in Displaced Peoples' Camps. I did walk the sad plight that Ukrainian people are walking.
After over 80 years, the chaos of war and destruction is still fresh in my mind.
My fervent hope is that the mayhem we see on TV will soon stop and the skies will clear up for the Ukrainian people as well as for us in the USA. The Ukrainian people will be able to return home and rebuild their lives, God Willing.
