New Year opportunity

By Tom Anderson 2 min read

A new year brings new opportunities. Happy New Year!

In Marietta, for those with an entrepreneurial bent there is a chance or possibility for progress or profit. Have you noticed the changes on Maple Street? There is a new butchery and bakery with more forward movement planned for 2023.

The state government has a perfect opportunity to encourage enterprises and possibilities. As the representatives begin the 135th General Assembly in Columbus they have a unique occasion to repair aged infrastructure and promote success in every corner of Ohio.

The federal dollars coming to this state from the rebuilding and recovery measures passed by the last Congress in Washington will amount to many many millions. It becomes the duty of the General Assembly to decide what and whom will be funded.

To encourage and assist Marietta's downtown and the developments in Harmar Village some of those funds should be directed to this usually forgotten corner of Ohio. I've written to our state senator and representative requesting they include the restoration of the walking bridge between the two sides of Marietta in their funding of worthwhile projects.

This bridge is distinctive and not just used by smiling tourists but also more locals than we might imagine. I urge you to join me in contacting those who can help this worthwhile project. You can write or telephone 95th District Representative Don Jones at 77 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43215 (614) 644-8728; and 30th District Senator Frank Hoagland Senate Building, 1 Capitol Square, Columbus, OH 43215 (614) 466-6508.

Perhaps civic participation can be one of your new year's activities.
