The Icons

2 min read

In today's world when we speak of Icons, Computers come to mind. Icons have been around since ancient times.

Early people wanted to leave posterity images. These images we enjoy today. The early icons were venerated as examples of goodness.

A friend of mine asked me as to where I go to church. I told her that I attend St. James Christian Orthodox Church at 120 Maple Street in Belpre.

I explained to her that it is the closeted Orthodox Church in the area. In our congregation, we have many who travel from Athens and Whipple as well as other surrounding areas such as Parkersburg, Vienna and Marietta.

We hold our church services on Saturdays and sometimes on week days. Huntington shares the Priest Father Mark Elliott with us. We are eternally grateful.

The exterior of the church has a golden cupola (dome) with a cross that can be seen from a distance.

The St James Christian Orthodox Church was renovated in 2019. It is very beautiful inside with many icons. My friend asked me, "What are icons?"

In short, I said, "to me, icons are like mirrors."

As one venerate s (revers) an icon and looks into the eyes of the painting of Saints as well as Jesus Christ, one should be able to see oneself because we are all made in the image of God. That is what separates humans from animals.
