When their house blows away, or floats away, or is burned to the ground, maybe, maybe, the climate deniers will realize we are in a climate crisis and they need to listen to the youth of the world.
A group called Prager U which describes itself as "the world's leading conservative nonprofit" is providing millions of students in Florida with materials that falsely claim wind and solar power pollute the planet and compare climate activists to Nazis. Texas has joined Florida in choosing these materials.
Why would people in Texas deny climate crisis when they have experienced some of the highest temperatures this summer? I believe they had an extremely cold winter awhile back and many lost their power. Why would people in Florida, deny the crisis because of the frequency and intensity of the hurricanes?
Lives have been lost, as well as, millions of dollars of property damage. What about the fires in California, Canada and now, Hawaii?
Yet, many of our elected officials meet with the coal and oil barons and promise to help them. Were not these people elected to work for the people? What are they doing about the people who have black lung?
We have been very lucky in the Mid Ohio Valley this summer. But as the storm on August 7th showed us anyone can be affected. We saw pictures of the flooding in Parkersburg and surrounding area. We had tornado alerts last week. What are we doing to slow this for the kids of the future? Hopefully our schools will encourage youth groups to help make change. One such group is Children's Environmental Literacy Foundation. Maybe the churches could read the encyclical by Pope Francis, Laudato Si.
Just maybe, we will see solar panels on all our schools, churches and public buildings.
