As a resident of Washington County, I sometimes can't appreciate the warmth, hospitality as well as the generosity of our community, until the need arises. That was the case, last Sunday, July 23.
It was 45 years ago, on that very day and date, that the Washington County, Division #1, of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish American fraternal organization, was chartered.
To celebrate this auspicious occasion, the Monsignor Donal O'Carroll, Division invited the A.O.H. Ohio State President, Dennis Parker, and his guest, Ms. Jeannine Spalvieri to attend as well as other officials and A.O.H. dignitaries and guests from around the State of Ohio.
To make this a memorable event, Ms. Launa Morus, of the Lafayette Hotel, as well as the local American Flags and Poles, came to our assistance, and possibly even our rescue. Ms. Morus made sure that the Rufus Putnam room was prepared and well-staffed.
American Flags and Poles made sure that in addition to the Honored Flag of the United States, along with the National Flag of the Irish Republic stood boldly and honorably, side by side, to welcome all to the gathering.
The Lafayette and American Flags and Poles, set the tableau as well as the celebratory nature of the Irish Gathering. It was a complete and unmitigated success, all the way around.
The Sunday Buffet, at the Lafayette, offered the right ambiance. None of the assembled, in typical Irish fashion, left either hungry or thirsty.
I just wanted to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Washington County (Msgr. Donal O'Carroll) Division to thank the City of Marietta for its warm welcome, the Lafayette for its invaluable hospitality, and the American Flags and Poles, for putting the frosting on the cake!
We of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, look forward to our 50th Anniversary and our continued relationship with the Lafayette as well as American Flags and Poles, for putting the final touches on the Irish Gathering.
