When our daughter Valerie was shy of 7 years, she returned from school very sad and soon started crying. I asked what the matter was. Through tears and sobs, she asked me if President of the United States was avery important person. During election time, her teacher had been talking to her class about elections.
I replied that indeed, that president who is elected by the people has to do a very important job. He is a very important person. Another deluge of tears, nearly uncontrollable subbing.
Again, I asked, "Why are you so sad and why are you crying?" Through, tears she said: "What are they going to do with Mr. Miles?" Mr. Miles was her principal.
I gathered her in my arms and assured her that Mr. Miles will still be her principal. I whiped her tears. She calmed down and went onside to play.
It is amazing and heartening to see the world around us through the eyes of little children. To Valerie, Mr. Miles was of paramount importance. He was someone children looked up to because he was always friendly, fair and kind to them and irreplaceable.
