On Saturday, Oct. 28 the Village of Beverly held a "Beverly Island Volunteer Day."
Sixty volunteers showed up to clear a trail around the 10-to-11-acre island, pick up trash, and build a life-size eagle's nest for children.
This event was organized by a new group in our community called "BW GRO," or Beverly Waterford Grow. BW GRO was developed to create ideas for family-friendly outdoor activities for our area and, most importantly, follow through with them.
The first major result was the island project. Our secluded Muskingum River Island is owned by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and was regularly used until the early 1960's, but was gradually forgotten, becoming overgrown and nearly inaccessible.
This hidden gym is now available to the public to hike and enjoy nature's beauty. It contains majestic trees, a beautiful beach near the dam, incredible driftwood, and wildlife. The trails are level and easy to walk on.
A special thanks on behalf of the Village of Beverly goes out to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for letting us use this beautiful island, the sixty volunteers, Marietta College for sending three students for their community day, Lightstone Waterford Energy Power Plant for providing help and supplies, Lock No. 4 Coffee for providing hot chocolate, and Dough Boyz Pizzeria for providing lunch.
Come visit our island! We want as many feet as possible to continue to wear the paths we cut.
