During this holiday season and entering the New Year, the volunteers at the Marietta Area Recycling Center (MARC) are reminded of our thanks for all of the community support in 2023. You helped in making sure we maintained a 24-hour/7-day-a-week recycling drop-off site.
In April of this year, we had the Marietta Earth Day Celebration at Armory Square. Despite its weather challenges, we had a wonderful turnout to this event and thank all of the organizations that participated as well as Peoples Bank for being a continued sponsor. We are excited that next year will be the 25th Anniversary of Marietta's Earth Day Celebration and will be busily planning in the New Year!
On the operational front, we have continued to deal with materials prices that are slowly recovering from market lows as well as high transportation costs. During these market conditions, we are dependent upon sponsorships to help bridge funding gaps and are extremely grateful to the following businesses who are sponsors of MARC, namely: All Pro Nutrition, Colegate Woods Veterinary Hospital, Eye Care Associates of Marietta, Hall Financial Advisors, Marietta Adventure Company, Mattressmax, Peoples Bank, R.W. Miller Plumbing & Electric Inc., Wildroot Flower Company and Wilson Heating & Cooling.
We are also thankful for those working behind the scenes that keep everything moving. Tim Heiss hauls our aluminum and scrap metal. He learned from the best, his father, Donnie Heiss, who passed away recently. Donnie hauled our scrap steel, glass and aluminum for over 20 years. He was always there to assist in any way he could. He will be missed and we are thankful that his son, Tim, follows the family tradition of helping at MARC.
We had for most of the summer a student volunteer, Luke, that helped with multiple improvements around the recycling center this year. From painting our green storage shed, to cleaning signs and painting barrels, he tackled anything that came his way. One of our recyclers, John Tillson, offered to help market our plant pots so they could find good homes and many went to Washington State Community College for reuse. He also engineered and built our new main entrance sign all made from repurposed materials. Thank you!
MARC is also able to continue to accept plastic bags and plastic film because of the generous assistance of Mondo Polymers. They pick up these plastics along with plastics that do not compact well within our compactor. MARC plastics get recycled into guardrail blocks and tire chalks at Mondo. Volunteers took a tour of their facility this spring and it was educational to see the process of how our materials are integrated into their production line. Thank you!
MARC is unique in that it is totally volunteer run. Volunteers come no matter the weather to make sure that we can maintain the inflow, 365 days a year. This is no small task and so my sincere thanks to the following volunteers: Dee Baker, Brad Bond, Ellen Bond, Laura Bradley, Cindy Brown, Jenny Bruce, Carla Cassidy-Archer, Lucas and Nevaeh Craft, Les Futrell, Tim Heiss, Loren & Miles Henthorne, Anita Kesterson, Jody Kohler and Jim Wright, John Line (Website), Angela Montgomery, Jennifer Naum, Tom O'Neil & Family, Sue Price, Bob Ritchey, Esther Salem, Glenn Santee, Rakibul Sarker, Raodet Sarker, Elke Schnabel, Russ Schreiber, Tammy Schreiber, Horst Siffrin, John Tillson, Lori Tofaute, and Susan Wunderlich. We also have student volunteers through Marietta College's Leadership Program which have been extremely helpful to MARC as follows: Elizabeth Burdiss, Laney Carpenter and the Sigma Kappa Sorority, Alex Fries, Kya Forker, Lexi Jobes, Shelby Metzger, Amanda Schlise, Katy Story, Gabe Tingle and Zachary Worstell. Without this very loyal hardworking volunteer base, there would be no MARC and so I am extremely thankful for them. Thank you!
The recyclers that come to MARC are also very helpful by following materials guidelines and sorting into appropriate containers so that volunteers can focus on review for contamination and packing for goal tonnage. Many also help by donating to MARC...so a big note of thanks for supporting the Recycling Center in these ways!
A reminder as we clean out our homes out from the Holiday Season, we accept paper (wrapping paper, office paper, newspaper, magazines and soft bound books), cardboard (flatten), steel, aluminum, green/clear/brown glass (bottle glass only), and #1, 2, 4 & 5 plastics (recycle triangle on bottom of container).
Please sort into the designated totes/containers at the site as our volume exponentially increases during this time of year. If you have any questions on materials, visit our website at mariettarecycling.org or our Facebook Page.
