To the many folks in Washington County who express willingness to help our local Military Veterans, here is an immediate need and your opportunity to do something tangible and meaningful. You do not need to be a Veteran. All you need is a valid current license to operate a motor vehicle, proof of insurance, and a decent driving record.
You can come be a Volunteer Driver with Washington County Veteran Service Office, driving local Veterans to needed appointments for care at a variety of locations. This is at your convenience, usually daylight hours, a weekday. You use the County vehicles, fuel provided, and your lunch is paid for.
This program is paid for in local taxes, and the Office recently purchased two new vehicles. They are kept clean and very well maintained.
I have been a Volunteer Driver for the WCVSO for years, and my experiences have always been fulfilling. Some of the clients are shy and quiet, while others might tell jokes the entire trip; you never know! You can expect reasonable advance calls for potential trips, and it is always your option to accept or decline a driving opportunity with no pressure. If you decide to be a part of the team, you might even find yourself with a sharp embroidered dress shirt as part of your wardrobe.
