Private and parochial schools meet and exceed state standards
There has been some public discussion recently suggesting that private and parochial schools in Washington County do not follow the same educational standards as our public schools. As a leader in Catholic education, I would like to clarify the facts for our community.
All private and parochial schools in Washington County that offer Ed Choice Scholarships, operate as chartered nonpublic schools under the authority of the Ohio Department of Education. In order to be granted a charter — and to maintain it — these schools must strictly comply with the State of Ohio’s academic standards, teacher certification requirements, health and safety regulations, attendance policies, and state-mandated testing.
Recent conversations surrounding House Bill 96, which strengthens dyslexia screening and intervention requirements across Ohio, have brought renewed attention to educational standards.
It is important for the public to understand that chartered private and parochial schools are fully required to comply with HB 96 and all related mandates. Protecting and supporting students with learning needs is a priority for all schools — public and private alike.
Earning a charter is a rigorous process. Maintaining that charter demands continuous oversight and accountability. The only key difference between chartered private schools and public schools is that private and parochial schools are permitted to integrate religious instruction into their curriculum, consistent with the rights protected under the First Amendment. However, no state or federal monies are spent on the religion courses. These funds come directly from the school itself.
Families who choose private education continue to pay taxes that fund public schools while also making an additional investment in their child’s education. They make this choice because of the smaller class sizes, individualized attention, and strong academic and character development that many private and parochial schools are able to offer.
The private and parochial schools of Washington County are proud to meet — and often exceed — the standards set for all Ohio schools. Our goal has always been, and remains, to prepare our students to succeed academically and to become thoughtful, responsible citizens.
