While our country is celebrating its 250th birthday the First Congregational Church, in Marietta, is celebrating the 230th year of its founding. The Congregational Church at Marietta was organized December 6th, 1796, with the creation of an organization called
the First Religious Society. It was composed of members residing in Marietta, Belpre, Waterford and Vienna, VIrginia. Rev. Daniel Story served as its first ordained minister.
On August 22, 2026 the second in a series of free programs, focusing on early leaders in Marietta, will be held at First Congregational Church, 318 Front Street, Marietta at 11:00 am.
Our two speakers, who are well known for their in-depth research and knowledge of local history, will focus on the Early Religious Pioneers: stories of the First Religious Society. Scott Britton, Director of The Castle Museum and frequent speaker on topics related to the Civil War and multicultural local history, will share information on Mary Bird Lake, highlight the religious leadership of General Rufus Putnam and share the accomplishments of Benjamin Ives Gilman.
David Baker, is a docent at Campus Martius Museum, The Castle Museum and Henderson Hall as well as a regular contributor of historical highlight articles to the Marietta Times. Mr. Baker will offer insights into the religious lives of Nahum Ward, Return Jonathan Meigs and Judge Ephraim Cutler.
This promises to be an inspirational and educational experience and will be held on August 22, 2026, Saturday, 11:00-12:00. While this program is free and open to the public, donations to offset expenses are greatly appreciated.
