Letter to the Editor: $30 from 3000

By Teresa R. Porter 2 min read

The journey started in 2020 during COVID, when the Washington County Homeless Project, a 501c3 since 2017, engaged city government and community churches to open the first Drop-in Center to assist those who are homeless or at -risk of homelessness.

The need since 2020 has not diminished but successes have been achieved with a collaborative effort from churches, local treatment facilities and the general public. The lives of numerous individuals and families have been impacted in a positive way. Many more people struggling with homelessness or at -risk of it remain hopeful that working with a team of supporters, they too won’t spend another winter out in the cold.

Fast forward, six years and long hours spent writing grants, recruiting and training volunteers while continuing to feed, wash, clothe and offer needed services to those who are homeless: the Drop in Center is preparing to move to a permanent location.

The greater Marietta Community has been more than generous in providing donations of food, clothing and cash to this point. The local grant programs have stepped up too, as has the Marietta Community Foundation to help manage private donations. While the grant money has been essential, the board understands that grants don’t last forever. The board has decided to launch a drive to raise $30 from 3000 individual supporters to be used to sustain the operation into the future.

Anyone wishing to become a Friend of WCHP is invited to mail a check written to the Marietta Community Foundation. P.O. Box 77 Marietta, Ohio 45750. Attn: WCHP30.

Thank you for your support.
