Tiger thinclads qualify for regional meet

Senior Ciara Space broke the oldest remaining Marietta High School individual record here Thursday evening during the Division I East/Southeast District Championship held at Marietta College's Don Drumm Stadium.
Space, who ran the anchor leg on the Tigers' regional qualifying 4×4 and 4×8 squads, won the 800 with a time of 2:22.59. That effort erased the old mark of 2:23.7 held since 1981 by former Tiger Carolyn Pickering.
"I've been working toward it all season," said Space, who joined Elizabeth Loughry, Rylea Durham and Madison Hogue for a runner-up effort to Dover (4:17.28 to 4:19.79) in the 4×4.
When asked if she knew whether she had broken the record after crossing the line the Tiger replied "I was pretty sure I did, but there's always that what if moment. It felt really good, but just going to keep working hard. Still got more races next week."
In the 4×8, the Tigers ran a 10:19.86 with Loughry, Claire Schenkel, Ava Gebczyk and Space, but were beaten by Dover (9:54.30) and Chillicothe (10:17.45).
The victors of the meet were the same as last week's East Central Ohio League championship as the boys from New Philadelphia (136.5) and the Dover girls (138) topped the field. Dover bested New Philadelphia (101) and Logan (90) while the Tiger girls finished fourth with 72 points. Marietta's boys placed ninth with 23 points. Athens (125) and Dover (91) followed the Quakers.
Marietta freshman Sadie Gray advanced in three events to next week's regional set for Wednesday and Friday at Pickerington North. Gray was runner-up in the 100 to Tri-Valley's Claire Martin (13.00 to 13.35), finished third in the 200 (28.15) and placed fourth in the long jump (16-7). Individuals and teams had to finish in the top four to advance.
"It's an extremely tough regional. It's like a state meet in itself," said Marietta girls head coach Mollie Schramm, who watched Ava Gebczyk advance in the 1600 after she finished in 5:29.83 to take third as well as Elizabeth Loughry placing third in the 400 (1:04.46) along with Isabella Becker finishing fourth in the high jump (4-10).
"We're tickled to see how well they've done and this heat I think that's really taken a toll on a lot of kids, but the kids we thought had a chance to get out have absolutely done well, and we are going to keep going on another week. Sadie Gray had a great day, Ciara Space breaking that school record, anchoring two relays for us, and she's done an awesome job. She's been a great senior for us and we're going to miss her."
Becker's 4-10 effort was an inch better than her Tiger teammate Gebczyk, who had to settle for fifth in the high jump.
Marietta's Kirsten Kroft's heave of 31 feet, 6 inches in the shot put was a half inch shy of advancing as she also placed fifth. The Tigers also got an eighth-place showing from Emily Arnold in the 300 hurdles (55.61). The Tigers' 4×2 team of Madison Hogue, Alexis Brown, Becker and Aysia Burke took sixth with a time of 1:54.26.
The only boy from Marietta who advanced out of the district was freshman Ezra Minard, whose time of 4:34.89 was good for runner-up behind 1600 champ Owen Brady's 4:21.44 clocking for New Philadelphia. Minard was fifth in the 800 as he was nipped by Athens' Moss Loebker-Conrad (2:05.73 to 2:05.87).
"I was close in the 800, but I prefer the mile. I like it more and I also do better in the mile," Minard said. "I raced with a lot of teams at this meet recently and I sort of used that knowledge where I should be to finish second place where I wanted to."
Despite knowing the going will be even harder next week, Minard is anxious to go out and give it his best once again.
"Probably a low chance, but it's a good experience for me being a freshman so when I'm older I'll already have been there before," admitted the Tiger. "I've never missed qualifying for anything from that close. The 800 will sting, but overall I'd say it was a good day and a good season. I'm the only boy, but I'll be accompanied by a lot of girls. That will be fun for me."
Marietta didn't have any other individual placers, but scored in a trio of relays -- 5th in the 4×4 (4:02.31 – Kasy Science, Caden Gebczyk, Landyn Listermann, James Goddard); 7th in the 4×1 (49.40 – Listermann, Science, Gebczyk, Maxwell McCabe); 7th in the 4×8 (9:38.98 – Benjamin Pfeiffer, Jeb Francis, Science, Isaac Lough).
The race of the meet came in the 200 were Chillicothe's Mamo Willison went 22.81 to narrowly edge teammate Xzavier Doss (22.86), Athens' Ishmael Young (22.88) and Quaker Trevor Bean (22.89).
Four district meet records were broken and one came in the 110 hurdles. Miami Trace's Jaden Haldeman crossed in 15.13 to break the 2013 mark of 15.27 previously held by Tri-Valley's Kris Michael. In the long jump, Chillicothe's Joel Barnes went 21-8.75 and that broke the 21-7.75 old record set by West Holmes' Brady Arnold in 2014.
Quakers Logan Ortt, Reise Meechan, Colin Roberts and Caden Richmond went 43.45 to break the 4×1 record of 43.58 previously set by Zanesville in 2014. The Quakers also erased Logan's 2012 record of 1:31.63 set in 2012 by clocking in at 1:30.44 thanks to Roberts, Trevor Bean, Meechan and the anchor Richmond.
