Pioneer roundup: Marietta women’s hoops team improves to 2-0
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Marietta College women’s basketball team earned a 65-52 road win at Washington and Jefferson on Saturday. With the win the Pioneers improve to 2-0 overall, and with the loss the Presidents fall to 0-1 overall.
“When the second half started we went on a big run, but they answered it, and the crowd was awesome for them,” said MC head coach Kole Vivian. “We can take a lot from winning this close game down the stretch on the road.”
The Pioneers were led by Erin Hahn, as she had a game high 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Hannah Schill had 13 points and led the team in steals with three. Olivia Gribble added to the offense with 11 points.
Marietta will return to the court Wednesday when they host St. Vincent, with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Roanoke 77, Marietta 68
SALEM, Virginia — No. 20 Roanoke College posted a 77-68 win over No. 3 Marietta College in the championship game of the Roanoke Dick Leftwich Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.
Lukas Isaly led the Pioneers with 20 points earning a spot of the All-Tournament team. Mason Lydic chipped in with 13 points, while Jason Ellis scored nine points and was named to the All-Tournament team after scoring 18 points against Christopher Newport on Friday.
Kasey Draper scored 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Efosa U-Edosomwan had 18 points and Tripp Greene added 10. Ethan Rohan pulled down a game best 12 boards.
Marietta returns home to host the Great Lakes Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers play Wabash College on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and No. 1 ranked Randolph-Macon College on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
FOOTBALL
Mount Union 37, Marietta 7
The No. 4 ranked University of Mount Union scored 21 first quarter points as the Purple Raiders defeated Marietta College by the score of 37-7 Saturday at Don Drumm Stadium.
Mount Union finished the regular season with a 10-0 overall record and won the Ohio Athletic Conference championship with a 9-0 league record. The Purple Raiders advanced into the NCAA Championship that starts next weekend.
Marietta ended the season with a 4-6 overall record. The Pioneers went 4-5 in the OAC.
Marietta got on the board in the final minute of the game. Bryce Agnew broke a 20-yard run and then caught a 28-yard pass from Connor Vierstra. Vierstra then connected with Dre Baldwin on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Jake Bolyard added the point after for a 37-7 final score.
Agnew finished with 48 yards rushing on 19 carries. He also had four catches for 46 yards. Viertsra completed 10-of-26 passes for 101 yards and one touchdown. He was picked off four times.
Vic Giovengo led the Pioneer defense with 14 tackles. Darius Hatch had 11 stops and Drake Neuberger and Kyle Gallagher had 1.0 sack apiece.
For Mount Union, Braxton Plunk competed 25-of-37 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns. Wayne Ruby, Jr. had nine receptions for 73 yards. Josh Petruccelli rushed for 59 yards on 20 carries and scored once. He added five catches for 59 yards.
Josh Jones had two interceptions for the Purple Raiders, including a pick-six. Duke Hill had a team-high seven tackles including 1.0 sack.
