Marietta College takes down rival Muskingum

The Marietta College women's basketball team got some national recognition this week, jumping into the D3Hoops.com Top 25 at No. 24.
Wednesday, the Pioneers got off to a slow start, but looked every bit like a top 25 team in the country in the second half as they pulled away for a 94-72 victory over rival Muskingum at Ban Johnson Arena.
Marietta (11-1 overall, 4-1 OAC) trailed 18-14 after a quarter but rallied to take a 40-38 lead into halftime. The Kole Vivian-coached squad really kicked it into gear in the third quarter, outscoring the Muskies (7-5, 2-3) 32-16 to pull ahead 72-54.
Jill Congrove led the Pioneers with 16 points off the bench. Starters Olivia Gribble and Hannah Schill added 15 points apiece, with Schill also tallying eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Erin Hahn nearly double-doubled with 10 points and nine boards to go along with three steals, while non-starter Kelley Levering netted 11 points. Makenzie Wilson finished with eight points, Hannah Kroft contributed eight rebounds, Devin Hefner chipped in four assists and Ally Grake came away with three steals.
Muskingum got a game-high 21 points from Casey Smith, who also led the Muskies with eight boards. Taylor DeMassimo added 18 points while Leia Smith netted 12 points. Halle Morehead chipped in nine.
Marietta finished the game with a whopping 61 rebounds and 90 shot attempts. The Pioneers are home again Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off against Wilmington.
MEN
NEW CONCORD -- Jason Ellis led the Division III, No. 8 ranked Marietta Pioneers with 26 points, seven assists and four steals in a 92-72 victory over Muskingum Wednesday.
Tim Kreeger added 20 points and eight rebounds for MC, which improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the OAC. Lukas Isaly also scored in double figures with 11 points, while Addy Black chipped in nine. Jac Alexander handed out three assists.
The Pioneers, who return home Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off against the Wilmington Quakers, shot a red-hot 55% (33 for 60) from the floor in the contest. They turned the ball over just seven times.
Muskingum, which committed 16 turnovers, got 17 points, seven boards and four assists from Alex Masinelli. DJ Donnell and Tanner Gensler added 14 points apiece off the pine. Donnell led the Muskies with five assists while Gensler grabbed seven boards.
