Warren looks to snap 2-game skid; Fort welcomes team from Canada

VINCENT — The Warren Warriors will look to get back on track Friday night when they welcome a familiar foe in former conference rival Logan to Warrior Field.

Things got off to a great start for the Jimmy Peyton-coached Warriors with a 60-0 win over Belpre in their opener but losses to Morgan (33-22) in week two and Fairfield Union (42-3) last week have Warren in need of a win to square their record at 2-2.

Last week against Fairfield Union the Warriors couldn’t get much going at all offensively as their only points came on a fourth quarter 30-yard field goal by Devyan Wilson.

Warrior quarterback Jacob Sealey completed 16-of his 29 pass attempts for 190 yards with 11 of those tosses landing in the hands of Tanner Pepper for 106 yards.

Nick Cressey hauled in two pass receptions for 43 yards while Eric Carr rushed for a team-high 32 yards on six carries while also hauling in 3 passes for 41 yards.

Cressey recorded the 11th interception of his Warrior career in the second quarter which places him in a tie with Chris Hendricks for the all-time school record.

Logan comes into the game in even bigger need of a win after suffering three losses to begin the season at the hands of Jackson (22-0), Teays Valley (28-6) and Sheridan (41-10).

Key players for the Chieftans include quarterback Tyler Morgan, running back Kaden West and receiver Jack Walsh.

Last year at Logan, the Chieftains edged Warren 17-14.

BISHOP TONNOS (0-0) AT FORT FRYE (3-0)

BEVERLY — The Fort Frye Cadets will look to keep things rolling at home Friday night when they welcome a brand new opponent in Bishop Tonnos out of Canada.

The game presents a unique challenge for a young Cadet team that continues to impress after pulling out a dramatic 22-15 win last week over a Bellaire team that they beat a season ago for a regional title.

Quarterback Sebastian Huck led a late Fort Frye drive that culminated with Bryndan Riddle scoring the go ahead touchdown on a 9-yard pass with just over three minutes to play in the game.

From there it was up to the Fort Frye defense to preserve the win and they were more than up for the challenge as Graham Baker, Blake Wheeler and Tyce Bradsley all came up big as the Cadets held on for the 22-15 win.

Fort Frye also owns victories over Marietta (21-18) and Belpre (62-0).

The Eric Huck-led Cadets also got huge games from their special teams units including punter Clay Greuey who averaged an impressive 54.7 yards on his three punts and place kicker Tytan Waller whose 4th quarter 25-yard field goal proved to be instrumental in the Cadet win.

Clayton Miller leads the Cadets in rushing in the first three games with 257 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries while Huck has completed 16-of-23 pass attempts for 260 yards and three touchdowns in his first year as Cadet QB-1.

This game will be the first one of the season for Bishop Tonnos.

WATERFORD (2-1) AT BELPRE (0-3)

BELPRE — Waterford will head into Friday nights Tri-Valley Conference game against Belpre looking for a bit of a breather after a tough three weeks to begin the season.

The Eric McCutcheon-coached Wildcats own hard earned wins over Alexander (20-0) and Shenandoah (24-22) sandwiched around a 41-14 week two loss to a very solid Caldwell team.

Last weekend at home against the Zeps, Hayden Jones’ 6-yard touchdown run and ensuing two-point conversion pass to Colton Jones proved to be the game winner.

Wildcat quarterback Zavier Heiss completed 17-of-26 pass attempts fro 161 yards including touchdown passes to Colton Jones and Caden McDougle.

First-year head coach Kevin Welsh and his Golden Eagles come into the game looking to get things headed in the right direction after three lopsided losses to Warren (60-0), Fort Frye (62-0) and Alexander (44-0).

Key players for Belpre include quarterback Willis Starcher, running back Aeden Mullins and receiver Alex Parker.

Last season at home the Wildcats rolled to a 47-0 win over Belpre.

FRONTIER (0-3) AT CAMERON (1-1)

CAMERON W.Va. — Looking to claim that elusive first win of the season, the Frontier Cougars face a very tough road test Friday night when they travel to Cameron to take on the Dragons.

Cameron comes into the game even up in their first two games after rolling to a 56-20 win over Hundred one week after dropping a heart-breaker to West Greene P.A. (28-24) in their opener.

Key players to watch for Cameron include receiver Kason Angel, running back Kylpsan Wallace and quarterback Colson Wichterman.

Frontier would like nothing better than to hand first-year head coach Damon Metheney his first win with an upset over Cameron and the Cougars will need to play their very best football to have a shot.

The Cougars fell at home to Bridgeport (27-25) and Miller (44-12) in the first two weeks before losing to Beallsville (25-13) in their first road game last week.

Last week against the Devils, Frontier led in the third quarter before surrendering 13 unanswered fourth quarter points to lose by 12.

The Cougar backfield duo of Ethan Snyder and Caleb Kirkpatrick were solid once again last week as they combined for 174 rushing yards.

Snyder ran for a team-high 95 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries while Kirkpatrick carried the ball 17 times for 79 yards.

Last season in New Matamoras, defending state champion Cameron easily handled the Cougars 42-6.

MONROE CENTRAL (1-2) AT CALDWELL (3-0)

CALDWELL — To say the Caldwell Redskins have been impressive in their first three games of the season would be a major understatement.

The Chance Rucker-coached Redskins head into Friday nights game at home against Monroe Central on quite a roll.

Caldwell owns wins over Buckeye Trail (39-26), Waterford (41-14) and Wellsville (49-7) to open the 2023 campaign.

Redskin senior quarterback Cale Bender has been as good as advertised as he has passed for over 700 yards and nine touchdowns in the three wins.

Bender has also rushed the ball 21 times for 155 yards and five more touchdowns.

Dylan Wheeler leads Caldwell in rushing with 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns while junior receiver Alex Herlan has been Bender’s favorite target as he has hauled in 15 passes for 323 yards and six touchdowns.

Jonah Moracco and Ethan Crock lead the Caldwell defense with 28 and 20 tackles respectively.

The Seminoles own a week two win over Bridgeport (43-0) sandwiched by losses to Edison (34-14) and River (44-22).

Last week against the Pilots, Carter Knowlton returned an interception for a touchdown and also caught a pair of touchdown passes from junior quarterback Tucker Howell.

Last season in Woodsfield the Redskins downed the Seminoles 56-8.

BUCKEYE TRAIL (0-3) AT SHENANDOAH (1-2)

SARAHSVILLE — Both visiting Buckeye Trail and home-standing Shenandoah head into Friday night in bad need of a victory after a slow by both former conference rivals.

The Warriors have opened the 2023 campaign with losses to Caldwell (39-26), Harrison Central (26-14) and Barnesville (42-8).

The Zeps have been competitive in all three game but a pair losses in week one to Union Local (20-8) and last week to Waterford (24-22) have them in need of a win to get back to even.

Shenandoah does own a week number two, 53-14 win over Shadyside.

Key players for the Zeps include sophomore quarterback Braxton Barnett, senior receiver Hunter Yates and senior running back Jacob Feldner.

Last season on the road the Zeps downed the Warriors 36-20.

MORGAN (2-1) AT SHERIDAN (3-0)

THORNVILLE — After a great start to the 2023 football season was at least temporarily halted last week with a loss to Philo, the Morgan Raiders will look to get things going in the right direction once again Friday night when they visit the unbeaten Sheridan Generals.

Morgan opened the season with wins over River View (52-0) and Warren (33-22) before dropping a 34-13 decision last week to the Electrics.

The Raiders scored first in the game on a 10-yard pass from Logan Niceswanger to Kole Searl but could not overcome 21 unanswered points by Philo to suffer their first loss of the year.

Niceswanger completed 24-of-31 pass attempts for 231 yards while leading the Raiders in rushing with 64 yards on 16 carries.

Searl hauled in nine pass receptions for 80 yards while Hayden Bankes caught seven passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

The Generals rolled to a 41-10 win last week over Logan after opening the campaign with wins over Licking Valley (33-14) and Watkins Memorial (24-19).

Last year in McConnelsville, Sherian edged the Raiders 18-13.
