BEVERLY — You can’t stop them. You can only hope to contain them.

That was an old ESPN SportsCenter highlight line several years back.

That very same slogan could be said for the Warren Warriors’ dynamic duo of senior Trent Taylor and junior Julian Stadelman.

The two combined for 45 points Saturday night in the Warriors 64-45 Twin State League win over the Fort Frye Cadets.

Stadelman tossed in 27 and Taylor added 18 as the Warriors improved to 11-3 on the season and kept their hopes of at least a share of the conference title within reach.

“I thought we did a nice job rebounding and did a nice job taking care of the ball for the most part and defensively we made them work for everything they got,” said Warren head coach Blane Maddox, in his 25th year at the helm. “We shared the basketball real well and Julian (Stadelman) got us off to a great start.”

Stadelman hit three triples and scored 11 points in the opening quarter as the visitors built a double-digit lead and led by six (17-11) at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors led by 10 before the pesky Cadets got baskets by Clayton Miller and Tavin Brooks in the final minute of play.

Warren shoved the lead right back out to 10 on buckets from Taylor and Stadelman to begin the second quarter before once again the Cadets made a little run of their own as back-to-back field goals by Treven Nicholson and Chatam Courson cut the lead to 21-15.

Unfortunately for the Cadets that would be their final points of the first half as the Warriors went on a 10-0 run to open up a 31-15 lead at the break.

Stadelman scored eight of those 10 points and finished the opening half with 19, four more than the entire Cadet team.

“He’s just unreal,” said Maddox of Stadleman. “He’s so quick and did a great job of finding the open man when they ran two at him and when he got a look he took it.”

The Cadets showed plenty of energy early in the second half and whittled the lead down to 13 but that would be as close as they would get to the Warriors, who stretched their lead back out to 19 by the end of the third period.

Warren completely dominated the boards as they out rebounded the home team by a healthy 33-20 margin led by Taylor and Hayden Wells with seven rebounds apiece.

Stadelman also registered a game-high six assists for the Warriors and did all of his damage on just 15 shots from the field.

Fort Frye head coach Eric Henniger knew what kind of a task his team was up against finding a way to slow Stadelman down.

‘When you have a kid going off like Stadelman did you either have to find a way to match it or even slow him down and we didn’t do either one,” said Henniger. “That got us in a big hole at halftime and we just couldn’t dig ourselves out of it.”

The Cadets were led in scoring by Miller with 15 points and Zach Huffman with 13.

Miller was six-for-eight from the field in the game and impressed his head coach with his play.

“He wasn’t feeling the best but he stepped up and I thought he played really well for us tonight,” said Henniger of Miller. “We’ve been looking for that from him all year long and the last two games he has kind of came out of his shell…. I think he’s finally getting healthy.”

Fort Frye (8-6) has struggled in conference play so far as they slipped to 0-3 after the completion of the first round of games.

“It’s tough playing bigger schools but it’s not new to our guys because we have been beefing up our schedule the past several years even before the new league,” said Henniger. “It shows us our weaknesses and what we need to work on so it helps us in the long run.”

While the Cadets hopes of a conference title are all but gone the Warriors still have hope and control their destiny in road games next week versus Point Pleasant on Tuesday and Marietta on Friday.

A pair of Warrior wins would keep them in the hunt for at least a share of the conference title.

“We know we can’t afford another loss and that’s our goal,” said Maddox. “That’s the plan and we will give our best effort to do that.”

Fort Frye will host the red-hot Marietta Tigers in a TSL game on Tuesday
