Marietta College junior linebacker Harley Hopkins was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week following the Pioneers’ heartbreaking 28-21 loss to Mount Union this last Saturday.

“Harley is a very good player,” Marietta head coach Andy Waddle said. “He found himself around the ball all day on Saturday.”

Hopkins helped hold the Purple Raider offense in check for much of the contest as he led the Pioneers with 12 tackles, including one tackle for a two-yard loss. Despite giving up two late touchdowns to the No. 3 ranked team in the country, the Pioneers held Mount Union to their least amount of rushing yardage in a game all year.

Hopkins, a West Muskingum graduate, also was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Marietta will close out the regular season at John Carroll in a game that will have post-season implications. The game is scheduled for this Saturday at 2 p.m.

MC’s Waganfeald honored by OAC

Marietta College senior Frank Waganfeald was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Midstream Lighting Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday afternoon by the league office.

Waganfeald helped the Pioneers defeat Mount Aloysius College last Saturday, 118-72. He led all scorers with 19 points as he made 8-of-10 shots, including his only three-point attempt. He also led Marietta with eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

The Pioneers will next be in action this weekend as they host the Marietta Shrine tournament. Marietta battles the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire this Friday at 8 p.m. Maryville and Mary Washington will play in the preceding game at 6 p.m. The winners of both games play on Saturday at 7 p.m. while the other two teams play in the consolation game at 5 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
