ST. MARYS, W.Va. — Addie Davis and Callie Powell combined for 50 points while the rest of the Blue Devils executed their roles as St. Marys rolled to an 82-41 win over Belpre in the St. Marys High School Invitational girls championship game Saturday.
Davis finished with game-highs of 27 points, five assists and five steals for a SMHS squad that improved to 12-1 and plays host to Calhoun County Tuesday.
Powell added 23 points for the Blue Devils, who shot 51.9% (28 for 54) from the floor while limiting the Golden Eagles (10-6) to 27.8% (15 for 54).
St. Marys scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back, going up 22-10 after one, 37-21 at halftime and 60-33 after three.
“We haven’t come out strong in some games lately,” said St. Marys head coach Fred King. “Tonight I thought we played well right out of the gate and set the tone. Really proud of the girls.”

Brynnley Bulluck added 10 points and three steals for St. Marys, which has a huge matchup Thursday at Williamstown. Anna Bennett scored seven points for the Devils while grabbing a game-high 12 boards and playing good defense against Belpre’s bigs.
“I told them before the game, ‘This is our gym,'” King said. “Put the stake in the ground and defend your home court.’ I thought they did a great job of that.”
Gracie Bills led the Golden Eagles with 13 points and seven boards. Haley Alloway added nine points while Julia Way chipped in eight.
Belpre, which entertains Eastern on Wednesday, committed 18 turnovers to Belpre’s nine.
Boys Championship: Belpre 56, Ritchie County 53
AJ Copen made seven 3-pointers, scored a game-high 26 points and hit a pair of clutch free throws late to help lift Belpre to a 56-53 win over Ritchie County in the SMHS Invitational boys championship game Saturday.
Belpre (7-7) trailed 53-50 with 2:45 remaining when Copen’s basket inside got the Golden Eagles within one. With 1:36 remaining, Copen split a pair of foul shots to tie the game. His older brother, Chris Copen, added another freebie with 44 seconds left to put BHS up one before AJ knocked down a pair at the stripe with 14 seconds left.
The Rebels (6-5) were unable to get the game-tying shot.
“He’s growing into his game and learning his role,” Belpre head coach Ryan Leasure said of AJ Copen, a freshman. “He’s taken some big shots for us this year. When he slows down and reads the game, he’s pretty good — not just for a freshman, but for a high school basketball player in this area.”
Ritchie County led by as many as 11 in the first half. Isaac Hodges’ bucket midway through the opening quarter put the junior over the 1,000-point mark for his career. He finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds, five steals, four assists and four blocks.
Hodges layup in the second quarter put the Rebels up 28-17 to prompt a Belpre timeout. The Golden Eagles finished the half on an 11-2 run — AJ Copen hit two 3-balls and Nasaih Spencer scored five points, to cut it to 30-28 at halftime.
Belpre trailed by five in the third when a drive by Malik Currie and a 3-pointer by AJ Copen tied it up at 38-all. With 2:42 left in the third, Carson Moore buried a trey to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Ritchie knotted it up at 48-all in the fourth on Rhett Johnson’s putback with 5:45 left. The Rebels later went up three on Seth Cronin’s triple, but the Copen brother combined for the final six points to secure the victory.
“That’s the best team win we’ve had in my three years here,” Leasure said. “Everybody was playing well. Everybody was sharing the basketball. Really proud of all of our guys.”
Cronin paced Ritchie, which visits Parkersburg Catholic Tuesday, with 18 points. Johnson added eight points, seven boards and five dimes.
Spencer finished with 12 points and four assists for the Golden Eagles while Moore chipped in eight points and five rebounds. Belpre shot 42.9% (18 for 42) in the game but was 61.1% (11 for 18) from beyond the arc.
Chris Copen, Haiden Tabler and Malakai Ensor combined for just four points but handled the bulk of the defensive responsibilities against Hodges, one of the top players in West Virginia.
“We knew (Hodges) could score,” Leasure said. “We rotated some guys on him — Malakai Ensor came off the JV team and played huge minutes for us tonight. Really proud of the guys.”
