POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- Marietta put together a stellar defensive effort in Thursday's 51-17 victory over Point pleasant to clinch a share of the Twin State League championship.
For the third straight season, the Tigers will share the league title with rival Warren.
Marietta (14-3) led 13-7 after one before outscoring the Big Blacks (6-11) 10-5 in the second to take a 23-12 halftime advantage. PPHS scored just two points in the third and three in the fourth as the Tigers pulled away.
Lucas Miller and Seth Britton scored 10 points apiece for Marietta, which plays host to Cristo Rey at 7 p.m. Saturday for senior night. Logan Grosklos and Owen Riley added six points each. Trey Hawkins finished with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals, all tied for team-high honors. Miller added three dimes while Riley grabbed eight boards and Wittekind chipped in three steals.
The Tigers overcame a 19 for 50 (38%) shooting performance and 18 turnovers.
Point Pleasant, which had just four field goals all night and was 8 for 12 from the free-throw line, got a team-high nine points from Carrsen Lambert.
Waterford 54, Federal Hocking 43
WATERFORD -- Reese Lang knocked down seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points to help lead Waterford past visiting Federal Hocking 54-43 Thursday at the Harry Cooper Annex.
The two teams will meet again in a rematch tonight in Stewart.
The Wildcats (8-9) led 20-13 after one and 31-22 at halftime. FHHS (3-15) got within seven 39-32, after three but Waterford maintained its lead through the fourth period.
Gavin Hiener added 13 points for WHS while Finn Pennock also reached double figures with 10.
The Lancers got 21 points from Cam Joy, 10 from Mosiah Cottrill and nine from Wren Ballew.
Magnolia 80, Trinity 47
NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. -- Kingston Christen buried nine 3-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 31 points in Magnolia's 80-47 win over Trinity Thursday.
Dubale Greathouse added 21 points for the Blue Eagles, who led 22-8 after one, 41-20 at halftime and 65-32 after three, while Hunter Oates knocked down three triples and scored 11 points.
Magnolia, which visits Parkersburg Catholic at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, evened its record at 8-8.
Trinity was paced by Austin Porta's 21 points. Parker Hopkins added 11 for the Warriors, who slipped to 1-12.
Ravenswood 57, Wahama 48
MASON, W.Va. -- Wahama trimmed a double-digit deficit down to two by the start of the fourth quarter, but visiting Ravenswood held on to escape with a 57-48 win Thursday.
The Red Devils (11-4) led 23-7 after one. Wahama (10-5) cut it to 29-18 by halftime before outscoring RHS 21-12 in the third to make it 41-39 with eight minutes to play. Ravenswood, however, out-pointed the White Falcons 16-9 in the final stanza.
Colin Layton scored a game-high 21 points for Ravenswood, which also got 16 points from Evan Swain and 14 from Kelan Lucas. Swain and Jacob Francis combined for 24 of Ravenswood's 28 rebounds, grabbing 12 apiece. Swain, who double-doubled, also posted team-highs with three assists and three blocks. Layton finished with three steals for the Devils, who shot 43.6% (17 for 19) from the floor.
Cooper Roush buried four 3-pointers and led Wahama with 18 point. Eli Rickard added 17 points for the Falcons, who play host to St. Marys Saturday.
GIRLS
Monroe Central 42, Warren 38
VINCENT -- Despite scoring just two points in the fourth quarter, Monroe Central held on for a 42-38 win over host Warren in Thursday's Ohio Valley Athletic Conference consolation game at Warrior Coliseum.
The Seminoles (14-8) led 15-13 after one and 26-24 at halftime. They built some cushion by outscoring the Warriors (9-10) 14-6 in the third to go up 40-30 with eight minutes left. However, the MCHS offense stalled in the final period with Warren outscoring the visitors 8-2, but ultimately falling short of completing the comeback.
Mayzie Emery scored a game-high 13 points to led the 'Noles. Jadyn Miller added 12 points, Brylee McFrederick chipped in eight and Zoey McGarry tallied seven. Monroe Central plays host to Ridgewood at 1 p.m. next Saturday in a Division VI sectional final.
The Warriors, who visit Alexander at noon this Saturday, got 12 points apiece from Mackenzie James-McGuire and DeLaney Gates. Sarah Pettey netted seven.
St. Marys 68, Doddridge 48
WEST UNION, W.Va. -- St. Marys outscored host Doddridge County 16-5 in the second quarter to create some separation and cruised from there for a 68-48 win Thursday.
The Class AA, No. 1-ranked Blue Devils (14-3) bounced back from a loss to No. 2 Wheeling Central Wednesday. SMHS, which plays Mingo Central at 10:30 a.m. Monday at West Virginia State, led just 18-17 after one before going ahead 34-22 by halftime.
Anna Bennett scored a career-high 27 points for the visitors while Brynnley Bulluck chipped in 19 points. Addie Davis finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals while Bennett grabbed a team-high six boards.
The Bulldogs (11-6) got 14 points from Aleigh Cheeseman, 13 from A'Kaia Williams and nine from Brooke DeHaven in the loss. They'll play host to Clay County at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
