Local wrestlers headed to state
Four Washington County wrestlers punched their ticket to the state tournament Saturday.
Warren’s Aden Strahler, Fort Frye’s Braxton Ross and Waterford brothers Colten and Hayden Jones all placed top four in their respective districts to move on to the big stage next Friday through Sunday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
Strahler earned his third straight trip to the state tournament by claiming the 175-pound district title in Steubenville.
Strahler opened his tournament with a 16-1 defeat of New Lexington’s Chase Shriner. After topping Steubenville’s Landon Crosier 4-1 in the quarterfinal, Strahler pinned Indian Valley’s Bradley Barr in 36 seconds to earn a spot in the finals.
With the district title on the line, Strahler squared off against Miami Trace’s Ethynn Munro, pinning the Panther in 1:40 to earn the top spot on the podium.
Ross joins Austin Powell (2023) as the only state qualifiers in Fort Frye history. Ross placed fourth at 215 in the Coshocton district.
Ross, a senior, pinned Huntington’s Ernie Cyrus in 1:03 in the opening round. After getting pinned by Newcomerstown’s Cage Miller in the quarterfinals, Ross bounced back back with a 10-3 win over Columbia’s Nathan Chapman. He then recorded back-to-back triumphs over Garaway’s Dillon King (6-5) and Martins Ferry’s Tayson Palmer (4:50) to earn a spot in the third-place match, where he fell to Barnesville’s Christien Hannahs 2-1.
Elsewhere in Coshocton, Colten Jones placed third at 175. The elder Jones brother recorded a 30-second pin against Malvern’s Jacon Rubins in the opening round beating Crooksville’s Hunter Hurst 16-3 in the quarterfinal.
Colten Jones fell to Barnesville’s Hines Ford 1-0 in the semifinal, but responded with a 2-0 decision over Huntington’s Carson McNeal to advance to the third-place match. Facing off against River Valley’s Levi Wood, Colten Jones came out on top 10-3.
Meanwhile, younger brother Hayden Jones finished runner-up at 157. The sophomore opened district action with back-to-back pins over Caldwell’s Adan Bender (4:30) and Toronto’s Drake Bouscher to advance to the semifinals, where he defeated Tuscarawas Valley’s Kylar Postlethwait 7-2.
Hayden Jones met Garaway’s Colton Domer in the championship match, eventually falling 7-5.
