Local golfers represent well at W.Va. Junior Am
DAVIS, W.Va. — A top 10 finish in the boys championship division and a pair of low rounds for the week closed out the final round for several local golfers competing at the West Virginia Junior Am Championships Thursday at Canaan Valley Resort.
In the boys field of 65 golfers, Parkersburg South High School’s Cameron Fallon shot a 3-over par 75 to secure a 10th place finish with a three-day total of 2-over 214.
A total of five golfers played under par all three days, including Charles Town’s Tommy Evans, who went wire-to-wire and won the championship with an overall total of 16-under 200, including Thursday’s final round of 1-under 71.
Huntington’s Jack Michael placed runner-up at 14-under 202.
Cooper Ward from Beaver, W.Va., climbed six spots up the leaderboard into third place at 209 after turning in the day’s low round of 7-under 65.
Area golfers also competing this week included Ravenswood’s Kelan Lucas (36th place, 235), Glenville’s Austin Stewart (T37th, 236), St. Marys’ Tripp Morrison (43rd, 240) and Glenville’s Troy Woodford (T54th, 258).
In the girls championship division, both St. Marys High School graduate McKenzie Armstrong and Williamstown’s Madilyn Buttrey turned in their best rounds of the tournament on Thursday.
Armstrong shot a 79 and earned a fourth-place finish with a three-day total of 245.
Buttrey took three strokes off her previous best round of the tournament after turning in an 87, which left her in a tie for sixth place at 268.
Chastyn Viars from South Charleston produced a four-stroke margin of victory after shooting an 81 on the final day for an overall total of 240.
