Warren blanked by Union Local, 35-0
MORRISTOWN — The Jets are soaring again as the regular season has reached its midpoint.
Union Local opened the campaign with a decisive win over powerhouse Warren JFK. That impressive triumph was followed by successive and close setbacks to Wheeling Central and Indian Creek, both of which boast strong squads.
Coach Bernie Thompson’s Jets, however, resumed upward flight a week ago with a 28-3 victory over rival Harrison Central. Union Local kept the throttle down Friday night by making it two straight lopsided wins via a 35-0 whitewashing of Vincent Warren Local.
The now 3-2 Jets return to action Friday, hosting a solid Beaver Local outfit.
Union Local’s latest win came about as a result of an explosive and well-balanced offense to go with a suffocating defense. The Jets held the Warriors to 99 total yards.
Meanwhile, the hosts were doing severe damage offensively on the ground as well as in the air. The winners rushed for 240 yards while producing 154 stripes via the airways.
All-Ohio running back Brody Perzanowski enjoyed another big night. The hard-running junior collected 164 infantry stripes and a TD. He now has over 700 yards on the campaign.
Senior quarterback Colby Carpenter was the ideal complement as he completed five-of-eight passes and a score. He also ran in a six-pointer.
“First of all I would like to give credit to Warren Local. They are a talented and physical team,” Thompson said. “With that said, I am pleased on how we performed tonight in all phases.
“We executed well offensively while defensively we were active and aggressive,” added the former Union Local and Waynesburg University receiving star. “But we still have some things to clean up, including penalties (the Jets were flagged 10 times). We just need to keep improving every day and take it one game at a time.”
Warren Local dropped to 1-4. The Warriors return to action hosting Athens.
Warren Local senior running back ace Eric Carr entered the game with 465 yards this season. The Jets’ swarming defense limited him to just 53.
Union Local scored on its second possession of the game following a Warren Local punt. The Jets put together a nine-play, 53-yard drive, capped by a three-yard run by senior Ryder Gainer. Gavin Fowkes added the PAT.
Thompson’s troops made it 14-0 on their next possession as Carpenter scooted untouched around the left end for a 15-yard TD. Fowkes again converted. The score was set up by a 30-yard aerial connection from Carpenter to senior Max Duncan.
The hosts took a 21-0 lead into intermission on the strength of Carpenter’s 28-yard scoring toss to junior Brody Kerns. Carpenter and Duncan hooked up on a 54-yard connection to set the table for the TD. Fowkes again added the PAT.
Union Local stretched its advantage to 28-0 via an eight-play, 66-yard drive with Kolton Snyder busting in from the one. Fowkes was again true.
The game kicked into OHSAA mercy-rule status with 1:33 showing in the third quarter after Perzanowski sprinted 58 yards to paydirt. Fowkes’s fifth PAT dropped the curtain on the game’s scoring.
Warren Local totaled 67 yards on the ground and completed six-of-15 passes for 32 yards.
Duncan hauled in three passes for 119 yards for Union Local.
“We have now won two straight and finished the first half of the season with a winning record. I am pleased with that as our schedule has been tough,” Thompson said. “But now we have another tough test coming this week. Beaver Local is a quality team. We need a good week of practice.”
