The Warren volleyball program of fourth-year head coach Ann Skufca kept their Twin State League championship hopes alive following the Warriors’ 25-15, 22-25, 25-20 and 25-13 victory versus rival Marietta here Tuesday night inside Sutton Gymnasium.

Setter Mya Stemple, who had a kill along with a match-high 38 assists, spread things around as the Warriors avenged a 3-2 setback to the Tigers they suffered 10 days ago in Vincent.

Elayna Greenwalt led the 13-4 Warriors, who return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday at Fort Frye, with match-highs of five aces and 18 kills. Sydney Starcher added a baker’s dozen downed spikes while Taylor Greenwalt registered a dozen kills and added a pair of aces.

“This team is remarkable,” admitted coach Skufca, whose squad started 10-0 but had dropped four of their last six. “They are definitely, when it comes to a rivalry game, they are all in.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them, especially for our seniors. That’s the first group that started with me. They just did a great job.”

Tied early in the opening set at six, the Warriors took the lead for good via a Taylor Greenwalt kill as Brooke Walters proceeded to rattle off eight consecutive service tallies, which included an ace, as the Tigers fell behind 15-6 and never recovered.

“When you work together at practice you see things and you don’t know how it’s going to pan out, especially in a rivalry game, but Brooke stepped up,” coach Skufca said. “I’m very proud of her and how she meshed with these girls. Going forward we got another big one on Thursday.

“You want to make sure that you continue doing everything you can going forward, especially with us having I think three weeks left of the regular season before tournament hits because that’s where all this hard work pays off from daily practices.”

The Tigers of head man Ron Kidder, who will carry a 6-3 record into Thursday’s home match versus TSL member Point Pleasant, jumped ahead 2-0 in the second set after a Haley Wilkinson bump set with Addie Graham serving led to a Lindsay Evans kill.

MHS stayed ahead at 6-5 via one of three aces from Ava Prim, who had 11 assists and eight digs.

Adele McCombs, who double-doubled with 10 kills and 11 digs while chipping in two aces and a pair of blocks, put the hosts ahead 15-10 after she put one to the floor.

However, Elayna Greenwalt served for two aces and helped close the deficit to 15-14, but the Warriors never moved in front. Karli Schaad’s kill got the orange and black to set point, which they earned on a service error.

Schaad’s downed spike from one of Graham’s 18 assists put the Tigers on the scoreboard first in set three. Things appeared to be going the way of the Tigers as McCombs had a pair of aces to put Warren in an 18-12 hole.

Elayna Greenwalt, though, served for six straight points that included a trio of aces and the Tigers fell behind to stay at 19-18 when Starcher mashed one. WHS libero Remi Elzey served for the final two points and a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-five match.

Marietta, which had won five straight, found itself trailing 8-3 in set three after Maevry McCombs put down one of her four kills. The deficit was at seven, 11-4, when Prim assisted on one of Rylee Wilkinson’s 10 kills. Although Clara Becker, who had two aces and 14 digs, strung together three straight service tallies to make it 11-7 the hosts never got any closer.

Warren had the Tigers doubled up at 20-10 following an Elayna Greenwalt and Kaitlyn Nutter double block. Braylee Bonnette served up an ace on match point.

When asked about her senior setter Stemple, coach Skufca replied “Mya is very impressive because last year she got a balance of everything. She got to do defense. She had to be a backup setter.

“She had to be a hitter and just all those skills that she learned made her a better setter. She’s done a fantastic job and I couldn’t be more proud of her being a senior captain on this team and leading these girls, and taking control when she needs to.”
