‘We earned this’: Warren boys get bucket list win over Marietta

VINCENT – If the senior class for Warren boys soccer created a bucket list for their final high school season, they checked the box on one item Tuesday night in the second of two regular-season matchups with Marietta.

Behind second-half goals from John Randall and Reme Fairbanks, the Warriors (4-3-2) defeated Marietta 2-0, which also marked the first time the Warriors’ senior class defeated the Tigers.

“I don’t like Marietta – they always beat me,” said Randall, a senior who scored the lone Warren goal in a 1-1 tie with Marietta earlier this season. “Being part of the senior class, we earned this – we finally took them and I was there to help.”

As ecstatic as Randall was following the match’s first goal at the 19:25 mark of the second half, he knew he couldn’t fully celebrate until Fairbanks beat his defender one on one with a sliding shot attempt past the keeper with 8:03 remaining in regulation.

Fairbanks took the original shot from the far side which resulted in Randall scoring on a rebound for the first goal of the evening.

“I was a little nervous – I was sitting there bouncing on the bench,” Randall said. “When Reme scored, relief just washed over me. It was like, we just got it done.”

Warren’s offense kept on the attack for the first 35 minutes of the first half and basically circled the netting without a shot finding its target. The majority of shots attempted sailed either high or wide.

Marietta keeper Finn Tindall made several impressive saves to boot and the two teams entered intermission in a scoreless tie.

Marietta started to show life toward the final moments of the first half and stole momentum for the first 20 minutes of the second. A Marietta fan base once silent got loud as the Tigers had several good looks – including a header from Cole Bergin which sailed just wide.

What would have given Marietta the lead instead was answered by a Warren assault which included two consecutive corner kicks.

“We could not get anything going,” Marietta coach Todd Morris said after his Tigers dropped to 2-4-1. “We thought we had some momentum with the win over Athens last Saturday. Tonight, we fell back into some bad habits.

“We weren’t very clean in possession. Warren put us under a lot of pressure. They were obviously amped up and played with a lot of energy. Ben has been doing some great things there at Warren.”

By the end of the match, Tindall made six saves compared to four for Warren keeper Jonah Hollis.

“We knew the Marietta keeper would be tough – he is very good and tonight he made some very impressive stops,” Warren coach Ben Atkinson.

While Marietta looks to rebound at John Glenn on Thursday, that same night Warren hosts coach Atkinson’s alma mater in Parkersburg South.

“I’m aware our coach graduated from Parkersburg South – I think he will be angry is we don’t win by at least five,” Randall laughed.
