Prep football roundup: Raiders top Electrics to clinch playoff spot
DUNCAN FALLS — The Morgan Raiders secured a playoff spot with a 21-12 win over Philo Friday night.
Morgan, which finished the season 7-3 for the program’s most wins in a season since 2000, awaits its playoff matchup and will look to win in the postseason for the first time in school history next week. This is Morgan’s third playoff berth in the last four seasons.
The Raiders built a 14-0 lead midway through the second after a 1-yard touchdown run by Tanner Bankes and a 10-yard TD pass from Haiden Pauley to Arlis Ponchak.
The Electrics (6-4) answered with 2:11 to go in the half on Jake Lincicome’s 3-yard touchdown. The extra-point was blocked, making it 14-6 at halftime.
At the end of the third period, Pauley hooked up with Hayden Bankes on a 20-yard TD pass to make it 21-6.
Philo answered quickly as Slade Sprankle ran for a 10-yard score with 11:40 to go in the fourth. Again, the PAT try was blocked, so Morgan’s lead stayed at two scores, 21-12.
Morgan got the ball back and effectively drained the clock. The Raiders ran 19 plays and drove deep into Philo territory before turning the ball over on downs. By that point, there was just 1:43 remaining in the game.
Gage Roberts’ interception on Philo’s final drive sealed the victory.
